Date 3-16-2011 I wanted a stout shooting and fun rifle for hog hunting in Alabama. I read a favorable article in AMERICAN RIFLEMAN on this replica 45-70 and bought a new one at my local dealer. The rifle was beautiful out of the box. Good fit between wood and metal and very antique looking. I choose to shoot 300gr factory Remington ammo,,,groups good..about 1 1/2 at 100 meters but with stout recoil. The 3 1/2 lb trigger is great without any slop. I could not get used to the globe front site and the Williams rear appature was bad about glare in bright sun so I got a Weaver type mount and installed a 3x9 scope. This really improved accuracy and increases light gathering for early or late shooting. I also removed the but plate and filled the stock bolt hole with 14oz lead to help with reducing recoil....it works. I feel this load is flatter shooting than the 405gr stuff and is more than adequate for pigs. I use one of those nylon shell carriers that fits over the stock for quick access to reload. I like it a lot and will recommend it for looks, quality and accuracy. My cost was $385 tax included. The only thing missing is some type of tempo sling to carry it with both hands free...maybe one made for period black powder rifles.

I have always stopped and looked at the old trapdoor and falling block rifles in the past.just omething about them. Of course the cost was always a factor. Just by chance I overheard some guys at the Gun shop talking about a tackdriving 45-70,HuH.What, a tackdriving 45-70? Now i''m all ears, tlked to these guys. they told me about the H&R Buffalo Classic. So as I always do,got on the Net and looked the rifle up, well it really looked good and at the first oppertunity I went looking for one. My shop didn''t have one,But will order one when there stocking dealer get them in stock. Bummer. Went to the gun show in StClairsville.Ohio and found one with less then half a box of shells shoot thur it.Found the Rifle and made a new friend of the dealer as well. Has a shop in Old Wasington,Ohio.. Ok im gitting off track. 375.00 Out the door.Stopped at a little state area I know and put one round thew it. Knew right away the I didn''t like the sights on the rifle.Didn''t shoot the rifle till 3 weeks later at Thunder Valley.By that time I hade replaced the rear sight with a CVA Tang sight and new inserts for thr Lyman 17A front sight.Added about a pound and a half of lead to the cavity in the butt stock. This makes the rifle just a tick under 10 pounds.]Rear sight was too small and has been drilled out to 3/16ths[Im not used to sending 300grs down range and and was not doing very well with the gun.. 2 inch group at 100 yards is not too bad. I''m a SIS and I''ll tell everyone that,This rifle comes back and it comes back HARD.Im sure the guys ]chest pounders[that shoot 500 grs at 2000fps will laugh. But a 30-06 is 16 on the scale 45-70 is 30 on the scale.and this is a 300grn load at 1800FPS. What a blast load up another one and do it again. Now I understand way the 45-70 has not died after all these years.. If you can work your way around getting one,You should and join the fun with this Truely CLASSIC old round. Evil
